Charities Update 2019 – Getting to grips with Governance – FULLY BOOKED

Start date: January 24, 2019 4:30pm registration for a 5:00pm start.

In January 2019, Kingston Smith and IBB Solicitors will deliver our popular annual charities update, bringing you up to date with the legal and regulatory developments in the sector.

By popular demand we have extended the seminar by half an hour to provide you with a more in-depth update.

There is never a dull moment in the charity sector and each year brings new areas of focus. One particular hot topic for the sector is good governance, which is fundemental to the wellbeing and success of any charity. Andrew Stickland, a partner from Kingston Smith’s city charities team, will present an overview of the Charity Governance Code issued by the Charity Commission, taking you through the six principles and highlighting useful tips and areas to consider.

The IBB team will then take you through some of the practical issues that charities have faced over the last year and where good governance comes into its own. They will look at the thorny question of when donations can or cannot be returned, the challenges of complying with the Charity Commission’s regime of serious incident reporting and the implications of the Commission’s new power to issue formal warnings.

In the second half of the seminar, Mahmood Ramji, our Heathrow based charities partner, will provide a general update on financial matters, including an update on changes to Gift Aid rules, the impact of the 2018 budget on charities and recent changes to FRS102 and the Charities SORP. He will also provide an update on how Making Tax Digital is impacting our clients, and what charities should be looking out for.

Ed Marchant from IBB will round off proceedings with a short talk about recent developments in employment law that will affect charities. Ed has worked alongside IBB’s charities team for some years and has helped charity clients with a wide range of HR and employment law matters.
